Every day we deal with questions relating to the legality of electric bikes.
We thought we’d answer some of the common questions with this brief guide to electric bikes and their rules:
The most useful thing to know about riding an electric bike is that it’s very similar to riding a conventional bicycle. The advantages are; they’re amazing fun and you smile each time you ride them, hills are made easy, wind disappears and you get to choose the level of effort you put in. You can even sit back and let the bike do all the work if you choose.
Here are the answers to some of our other most common questions:
Anyone over the age of 14 can ride an electric bike
You do not need a license or permit to ride an electric bike
Electric motors are not permitted to propel the bike faster than 15.5mph (25kph)
Protective clothing such as helmets are recommended but not a legal requirement
We can supply bikes which go faster, but they are legally for off-road use only
The bikes can be serviced by any UK bike shop. There is no need to take them to a specialist electric bike shop. Our bikes only use parts which you will find on good quality conventional bicycles, making servicing simple for any good quality bike shop.
We also have an electric bikes buyer guide and FAQs page to help you with any other questions you may have. Our advisors are also very happy to answer your questions by phone, email or at the store.
